Warning line

Are warning lines important for the theory test and the practical driving test?

Yes, warning lines are very important. They mark places with poor visibility, such as curves, and show where it can be risky to change lanes or overtake.

Warning lines mark areas where visibility is too poor or too short for safe overtaking. These lines typically appear when you are approaching hazardous points such as curves, and they can be either yellow or white. White lines signal that it may be risky to change lanes, especially on highways near the entrance to acceleration lanes. Even though overtaking is still allowed, for example when passing a bicycle or a slow-moving tractor, the driver still has to judge the risk. It may be safer to wait until after the curve to overtake.

Example of a warning line

Picture of a warning line in the middle of the road before a curve

In this picture you can see a warning line in the middle of the road. Here visibility is too short for a normal overtaking move, because there is a curve a little farther ahead. Because of the upcoming curve, other vehicles may appear suddenly, which makes the situation dangerous if you are in the middle of an overtaking maneuver.
