Give-way symbol
Is the yield symbol important for the theory test and the practical driving test?
Yield symbols are usually not very central to the theory test or the practical driving test. They give advance warning about the duty to yield and make drivers aware of situations where they have to yield.
What is the yield symbol?
The yield symbol is a road marking that warns you that you will soon have to yield to other traffic. It is often used in front of sign 202 “Yield” to make drivers extra aware of situations where they have to yield. In normal use, the yield symbol is usually placed 50–100 meters before a yield line, or 25–50 meters before the point where an entry ramp joins a through lane.

What is the difference between the yield symbol and the yield line?
The difference between the yield symbol and the yield line is that the yield symbol is a warning marking that gives early notice of the duty to yield, while the yield line is the actual line that marks the place where you have to stop or give way to other traffic. The yield symbol helps you prepare, while the yield line marks the action you have to take.
Where do we find yield symbols?
Yield symbols are often found in situations where it is important to warn drivers about the duty to yield early. These include:
- On high-speed roads, where drivers need extra time to react.
- Before intersections (including roundabouts) with poor visibility or complex traffic conditions.
- On entry ramps where the duty to yield applies, typically 25–50 meters before the ramp joins the through lane.
Why are yield symbols used?
Yield symbols are used to improve traffic safety by giving drivers better advance notice of the duty to yield. This helps especially in situations where it can be hard to spot the sign in time, such as in poor visibility or at high speeds. By making drivers more aware of an upcoming duty to yield, the risk of dangerous situations and traffic accidents goes down.
