Is the passing place sign important for the theory test and the driving test?

The passing place sign is not among the most central signs during the driving test, since you rarely encounter it in city traffic. On the theory test, however, you may be asked what the sign means and which rules apply where it is placed.

What does the passing place sign mean?

The sign marks a widening of the roadway on a narrow road, so that two vehicles can meet and pass each other. When the sign is in place, it is prohibited to park in the passing place across the entire width of the road, for as long as the roadway is widened, according to traffic rules § 17 no. 2 b).

When do you encounter the passing place sign?

You will most often find the passing place sign on narrow roads such as:

  • Rural county roads – roads through forests or farmland.
  • Tourist roads – narrow stretches in the mountains and valleys.
  • Forest roads – gravel roads with little traffic.

In the image you can see the passing place sign. Use the widened section to stop and let oncoming traffic pass.

What happens if you park in the passing place?

If you park in a passing place where the sign is placed, you risk a fine and obstruct oncoming traffic. The prohibition covers the entire roadway in the passing place, for as long as the widening extends. Incorrect parking can create dangerous situations on narrow roads where there are no other places to pass.

Why is the passing place sign important?

The passing place sign contributes to increased traffic safety on narrow roads by marking safe places for oncoming vehicles to pass each other. Knowledge of the sign provides better traffic flow and reduces the risk of accidents on narrow stretches.
