Information signs

What do information signs look like?

Information signs are square, with a blue background, white border and a white symbol with text. There are exceptions to this rule of thumb. Information signs provide information about special rules — including prohibitions and requirements that apply on a particular stretch of road or at a specific location.

Is the dead end sign important for the theory test and the driving test?

The dead end sign is important for the theory test and during the driving test. You must know the sign to answer correctly on the exam and show that you can follow traffic signs in practice.

What does the dead end sign mean?

The dead end sign means that the road is a dead end for car traffic. You must turn around or find another route, because the road does not continue through. The variant with a pedestrian and cyclist symbol shows that pedestrians or cyclists can pass through.

When do you encounter the dead end sign?

You will often encounter the dead end sign at:

  • Side roads or residential streets – when the road ends in a dead end.
  • Private roads – when the road is closed to general traffic without through access.
  • Streets with a physical barrier – using a gate or barrier.

In the image you can see a dead end sign at the start of a road that ends at a barrier. Here, drivers must stop and turn around.

Why is the dead end sign important?

The dead end sign helps drivers navigate safely by showing that the road does not continue. It reduces unnecessary traffic in residential areas and prevents drivers from going the wrong way.
