Is the fuel sign important for the theory test and driving test?

The fuel sign is not among the most central signs you need to know for the theory test or the driving test. It can come up as a question on the theory test, but rarely, and during the driving test it is unlikely that you will be tested on it directly. Still, it can be useful to know what the sign means, especially on long drives.

What is the fuel sign?

The fuel sign is a service sign that informs you that there is a gas station or fuel facility nearby.

When do you encounter the fuel sign?

You see the fuel sign in these situations:

  • Before a motorway exit – at least 1 km before the exit to a gas station located right by the motorway.
  • Along national and county roads – when there is a long distance between gas stations.
  • On two-lane roads – advance warning of a gas station outside built-up areas.

What happens if you miss the fuel sign?

If you drive past the fuel sign without noticing it, you risk running out of fuel. On the theory test you can lose points if you do not recognize the fuel sign and its meaning.
