Is the rest area sign important for the theory test and driving test?

The rest area sign is not among the most central signs you need to know for the theory test or the driving test. It can come up as a question on the theory test, but it is not among the most common. During the driving test it is unlikely you will be tested on the sign directly, but it can be useful to know – especially on longer drives where you need to plan breaks.

What is the rest area sign?

The rest area sign warns that a rest area is coming up in direct connection with the road. The rest area is physically separated from the carriageway and usually has tables, benches and a trash can. If you see a restroom symbol next to it, it means there is also an accessible restroom (adapted for wheelchair users).

When do you encounter the rest area sign?

You typically encounter the rest area sign 1–2 km before the exit on most road types. On motorways and expressways the distance can be up to 2 km.

What happens if you do not take a break at the rest area?

Stopping is not mandatory, but breaks are important to avoid fatigue. Without rest the risk of inattention and accidents increases, especially on long stretches.

Why is the rest area sign important?

The rest area sign helps you plan breaks and stay focused. Short rest breaks reduce the risk of traffic accidents and give a better overview of the trip.
