Direction signs
What do direction signs look like?
Direction signs are square and can have several background colours, including blue, yellow, white, orange and brown. There are exceptions to this rule of thumb. Direction signs provide information about place names, services, routes, lane choices, road choices and the distance to destinations.

Is the street/road name sign important for the theory test and the driving test?
The street/road name sign is not among the most central signs you have to know for the theory test or the driving test. It is useful for finding your way and orienting yourself, but it is rarely a sign you are tested on directly.
What is the street/road name sign?
The street/road name sign shows the name of the street or road you are passing or about to turn onto. The text is black on a white background, and the sign has a thin black border around it.
When do you encounter the street/road name sign?
You see the street/road name sign in these situations:
- In urban areas – at every road arm in the block system to show street names.
- On rural roads – at exits to smaller roads to show road names in rural areas.
- At road junctions – ensures that unfamiliar drivers find the correct road arm and address.
Why is the street/road name sign important?
Reading street names quickly helps you navigate in unfamiliar terrain, find addresses and avoid taking the wrong exit. Having enough time to see the name lets you brake or change lanes safely before turning.
