Marker signs

What do marker signs look like?

Marker signs are square and have yellow symbols on a black background, or black symbols on a white background. There are exceptions to this rule of thumb. Marker signs provide information about how the road continues or about obstacles on or near the roadway.

Is the obstacle marker sign important for the theory test and the driving test?

The obstacle marker sign is something you need to learn, but it is not the most important thing for the theory test or the driving test. Even so, it is a good idea to know what it means.

What is the obstacle marker sign?

The obstacle marker sign is used to show obstacles on the road that may be dangerous for traffic. For example, it can mark:

  • side obstacles that may pose a danger to traffic
  • narrowings of the roadway
  • traffic islands
  • speed bumps

The sign also shows which side you can pass on. If the sign points down to the right, you must pass on the right side. If it points down to the left, you must pass on the left side. This sign points down to the right, so you must pass the sign on the right side.

When the sign is yellow and red as shown here, it is temporary.
