Information signs

What do information signs look like?

Information signs are square, with a blue background, white border and a white symbol with text. There are exceptions to this rule of thumb. Information signs provide information about special rules — including prohibitions and requirements that apply on a particular stretch of road or at a specific location.

The sign indicates that the traffic rules for motorways apply from the sign until sign 504 "End of motorway", until sign 503 "Express road", or until a junction between an exit road from the motorway and a road that is not a motorway.

Is the motorway sign important for the theory test and the driving test?

The motorway sign is important on the theory test, where you need to know the rules for motorways, and during the class B driving test to show that you understand that motorway rules come into effect.

What does the motorway sign mean?

The motorway sign indicates that motorway traffic rules apply from the sign until you reach an "End of motorway" or "Express road" sign. This means that only motor vehicles and combinations capable of driving at least 40 km/h are allowed, and walking, cycling, mopeds, reversing, turning, and stopping are prohibited.

Where do you find the motorway sign?

You will encounter the motorway sign:

  • At the start of motorways – where an ordinary road transitions into a motorway.
  • On entrance ramps – before you drive onto the motorway.
  • At entrances from rest areas – where traffic merges directly onto the motorway.

In the image below, you can see the motorway sign placed on a ramp just before entering a motorway. The sign marks that you must now follow the motorway rules.

Why is this sign important?

Motorways are essential for traffic to flow smoothly and efficiently. They ensure that only suitable vehicles maintain high speeds, and that vulnerable road users and slow vehicles are kept off the motorway.
