Information signs

What do information signs look like?

Information signs are square, with a blue background, white border and a white symbol with text. There are exceptions to this rule of thumb. Information signs provide information about special rules — including prohibitions and requirements that apply on a particular stretch of road or at a specific location.

Is the end-of-motorway sign important for the theory test and the driving test?

The end-of-motorway sign is important both for the class B theory test and during the driving test. On the theory test you may be asked about the meaning and placement of this sign, and you must show that you understand that motorway rules now cease to apply.

What does the end-of-motorway sign mean?

The end-of-motorway sign indicates that you are no longer driving on a motorway. Speed limits, overtaking rules, and other special motorway provisions cease to apply, and ordinary road rules and any new signs determine how you must drive onward.

When do you encounter the end-of-motorway sign?

The sign is placed in these situations:

  • Where the motorway transitions directly into an ordinary road without becoming an express road.
  • In places where road users may be unsure about where the motorway actually ends.
  • As an advance warning 400–500 m before the endpoint, with a supplementary sign showing the distance.

Why is the end-of-motorway sign important?

The end-of-motorway sign tells you that you must change your driving pattern and speed to comply with ordinary road rules. It contributes to traffic safety and ensures that all drivers know when motorway standards cease to apply.
