Is the home zone sign important for the theory test and driving test?
The home zone sign is very important both on the theory test and during the driving test. On the theory test you may be asked what the sign means and which rules apply in a home zone. On the driving test you must show that you recognize it and follow the rules – especially that you drive at walking pace and give pedestrians priority.
What does the home zone sign mean?
The home zone sign indicates that you are entering an area where pedestrians have priority, and all driving must be on the pedestrians' terms. You must drive at walking pace (about 5–7 km/h), you must yield to pedestrians, and parking is only allowed in marked spaces. When you leave the home zone, you must yield to all other traffic.
Where do you find the home zone sign?
The home zone sign is often used in:
- Housing cooperatives and residential areas – to create safe areas for play and recreation.
- Small streets in city centers – where pedestrians and cyclists share the road with cars.
- Areas without sidewalks – where the entire street width is used by all groups of road users.
In the image you can see a home zone sign at the entrance to a residential area. Here, drivers must lower their speed to walking pace and be extra alert for children playing, people walking, and cyclists. The whole area is designed so that vulnerable road users feel safe.

What happens if you break the rules in a home zone?
If you drive too fast or fail to yield to pedestrians in a home zone, you may receive a fine, points, or lose your driver's license for serious violations. You may also create dangerous situations for children and other vulnerable road users.
Why is the home zone sign important?
The home zone sign contributes to safer living environments by reducing vehicle speeds and giving pedestrians priority. It creates a shared outdoor area where everyone can move safely, and where driving takes place on the vulnerable road users' terms.
