Is the CNG fuel sign important for the theory test and driving test?

The CNG fuel sign is not among the most central signs on the theory test or driving test, but it can come up as a question. It is especially relevant for drivers operating CNG vehicles, since refueling stations can be rare and require planning.

What does the CNG fuel sign mean?

The sign (symbol 610.2) shows that there is a 24-hour CNG refueling station. It can be combined with symbol 610.1 if the station also offers gasoline or diesel. Company names, logos or fuel brands must not appear on the sign.

When do you encounter the CNG fuel sign?

The CNG fuel sign can be placed:

  • On motorways and expressways – as advance warning at least 1 km before the exit to a CNG station located directly adjacent to the road.
  • On other roads – if the station is not visible early enough for a safe exit, or if there is an unusually long distance between CNG locations.
  • On direction signs – if the station is up to 5 km from the road. If the distance is more than 500 meters, it should be indicated on the sign.

What happens if you run out of CNG?

If you miss the CNG fuel sign and run out of gas, you may end up stranded in a place where the next refueling option is far away. This can cause delays, extra costs, and in the worst case dangerous traffic situations.

Why is the CNG fuel sign important?

The sign helps you plan refueling in time and avoid problems with an empty tank. For CNG vehicles this is especially important, since there are fewer refueling stations than for gasoline and diesel. Even though it rarely is a main topic on tests, it is part of being able to read and understand service signs.
