Is the ski trail sign important for the theory test and driving test?

The ski trail sign is not among the most central signs you need to know for the theory test or the driving test. It can come up as a question on the theory test, but it is not among the most common. During the driving test it is unlikely you will be tested on the sign directly, but it can be useful to know – especially if you are driving in areas with winter activities.

What is the ski trail sign?

The ski trail sign indicates that you are approaching the starting point for a marked cross-country ski trail in the terrain. There must always be an information board next to the sign giving an overview of the trail network, length and difficulty.

When do you encounter the ski trail sign?

You can often see the ski trail sign:

  • At parking lots for ski trails – where cars are parked before people set off on skis.
  • Entrances to hiking trails – at starting points where trails are groomed in winter.
  • Rest areas and recreation gateways – where the municipality has set up facilities for winter activity.

What must you as a driver remember at the ski trail sign?

When you see the ski trail sign, drive carefully and park so that skiers have plenty of room to start in the track. Avoid blocking the way into the trail network, and show consideration for vulnerable road users crossing the road.

Safety around the ski trail sign

Skiers may cross the road at the trail. Reduce your speed at the entrance to the parking lot, follow the signage to the trail start, and be prepared for hikers and children nearby.
