What do direction signs look like?
Direction signs are square and can have several background colours, including blue, yellow, white, orange and brown. There are exceptions to this rule of thumb. Direction signs provide information about place names, services, routes, lane choices, road choices and the distance to destinations.

Is the toll road / user payment sign important for the theory test and driving test?
This sign is part of the theory test syllabus, and you should be able to recognize it and understand its main meaning. It is usually less central during the driving test, but you should still be familiar with it.
What is the toll road / user payment sign?
The toll road / user payment sign tells you that there is a payment station ahead that you have to pass through. When you see the toll road / user payment sign, you must be ready to pay tolls or ferry fares.
When do you encounter the toll road / user payment sign?
You may encounter the toll road / user payment sign at:
- Toll stations on the motorway – at exits to staffed or automatic payment.
- Entry to a toll cordon – where you enter urban areas with tolls.
- Ferry quay with onshore payment – before you board the ferry.
What happens if you fail to pay?
If you pass the toll road / user payment sign without paying, you may receive an additional fee and an invoice in the mail. You also risk reminder fees and additional costs if you do not pay within the deadline.
