Questions and answers about the driving test

Is the driving test valid absence from school?

Yes. Since 1 August 2025 the practical driving test for a car is valid absence in upper secondary school. The absence does not count towards the absence limit, as long as you can document it.

The rule for the driving test

The absence limit in upper secondary school is ten percent in each subject. With more absence than that, you can lose the grade. The driving test does not count, as long as you can document it.

The exception applies from 1 August 2025. The practical test is part of the driving test for class B, and the whole driving test is on the list of valid absence. Your teacher must still have enough to grade you on.

The same applies at private upper secondary schools, and it also applies if you have to take the driving test again.

The courses before the test count too

These parts of the training also count as valid absence:

  • The safety course on the track, often called skid training.
  • The second and third parts of the safety course on the road, the rural road driving and the driving in varied traffic.

Ordinary driving lessons and the basic traffic course are not on the list. Nor are tests for mopeds or motorcycles.

The driving test on your diploma

You can ask for the day of your driving test to be left off your diploma. Show the documentation when you ask. This applies to up to ten days of absence in a school year in total.

How to document the driving test

Ask your contact teacher what the school accepts as documentation. The booking confirmation from Statens vegvesen shows the date and time. For the safety courses you can ask the driving school for a confirmation.

Statens vegvesen sets aside 75 minutes for the driving test itself.
