Questions and answers about the theory test

Is the theory test valid absence from school?

Yes. Since 1 August 2025 the car theory test is valid absence in upper secondary school. The absence does not count towards the absence limit, as long as you can document it.

What the rules say

In upper secondary school you can lose the grade in a subject if you are absent for more than ten percent of it. The theory test does not count towards those ten percent, as long as you have documentation.

The exception came on 1 August 2025. That is when the driving test for class B joined the list of valid absence, and the theory test is the first part of the driving test. Your teacher still needs enough to grade you on.

The same applies at private upper secondary schools, and it also applies if you have to take the test again.

Before August 2025 the driving test was not on the list. That is why older pages say the theory test is not valid absence.

Absence on your diploma

You can also ask your school to keep the absence off your diploma. Show the documentation when you ask. Up to ten days of absence in a school year can be kept off this way in total.

How to document the absence

Your school decides what it accepts as documentation, so ask your contact teacher. The booking confirmation from Statens vegvesen shows the date and time, so it is a good place to start.

You take the theory test at a traffic station, and it lasts 90 minutes.
