Questions and answers about practice driving
Does the car insurance cover practice driving?
Yes. The liability insurance always applies when you practise, because the law says so. The large insurers also write that the whole car insurance applies, and you do not need to tell them.
What the law says
When you practise, the supervisor counts as the driver of the car. That is in the Road Traffic Act.
Liability insurance is required for every registered car and is also called trafikkforsikring. It covers damage the car does to people and to other people's property, also when a learner drives and no one is to blame.
Damage to your own car is covered by comprehensive cover, if you have it. What comprehensive cover pays for is set by the insurer's terms. It is not in the law.
What the insurers say
As of November 2026 these insurers write that the car may be used for practice driving with no change to the insurance:
- If
- Gjensidige
- Tryg
- Fremtind
- Frende
- Storebrand
Several of them also write that the deductible is the same as usual. If you have a discount because no driver is under 23, you keep it with several of the insurers.
The terms can change, and they differ between insurers. Contact your insurer if you are in doubt.
If you use a car from a car sharing service, check whether practice driving is covered there.
When the rules are not followed
The insurance assumes the practice driving is lawful. Several insurers have a safety rule that the learner and the supervisor must follow the rules for practice driving.
If you break the rules, the payout for damage to the car can be cut or lost. That applies for example if the supervisor does not meet the requirements for a supervisor.
Anyone injured is still paid by the liability insurance.
