Questions and answers about practice driving

Can you practise driving in Sweden?

Not privately with a supervisor. The Norwegian certificate only applies in Norway, and in Sweden you need a Swedish permit and a supervisor approved there. With a Norwegian driving school and a Norwegian instructor you may still practise in Sweden.

Private practice in Sweden

To practise privately in Sweden you need a Swedish körkortstillstånd. The supervisor must be approved as a handledare by Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish transport agency.

Transportstyrelsen does not approve a handledare for a learner who only holds a permit from another country. The learner must first get the Swedish körkortstillstånd.

The supervisor must be 24 or older and have held a licence for at least five of the last ten years. Licences from Norway and the rest of the EEA are accepted, and from 1 August 2026 the Swedish introduction course is no longer needed.

With a Norwegian driving school

A Norwegian driving school may hold practice driving in Sweden when a Norwegian instructor follows the driving. The car must then carry a sign in Swedish saying it is used for practice driving.

Denmark

Denmark has no private practice driving. There you may only practise with an approved driving instructor beside you, and the instructor counts as the driver.

Other countries

Statens vegvesen writes that the Norwegian rules for practice driving only apply in Norway. Elsewhere the rules of the country you are in apply, and they differ from country to country.

If you want to practise on holiday, check the country's rules before you travel. The rules at home are in the rules for practice driving.

A driving log at home

At home in Norway you can log every drive for free in the Teorimester app. See how the driving log works.
