Questions and answers about the driving test

Must you rent a car for the driving test?

Yes. The car you take the test in must be approved by Statens vegvesen and rented from a driving school. You cannot take the test in an ordinary private car.

Why the car must be approved

The car must have pedals on the passenger side too, so the examiner can brake. It must also have extra mirrors, so the examiner can see behind the car and see you.

The approval is noted in the registration certificate. The driving school must own or lease the car.

How you get the car

If you take the test with a driving school, in practice you get the car from them. Ask the driving school if you are unsure.

It is common to take the test in the same car you had your lessons in. That helps, because you already know the car.

If you want, the instructor can also come along during the test.

Automatic or manual

If you take the test in an automatic, your licence only covers cars with automatic gears. If you take it in a manual, you may drive both.

Get ready in the app

Before the test you can practise the questions for the safety check and take a mock driving test in the app.
