Questions and answers about the theory test
How long is the theory test valid?
The theory test is valid for three years. You must pass the driving test within three years of passing the theory test, or take it again.
How the three years are counted
The three years count from the day you passed the theory test. If you passed it on 10 March 2026, you must pass the driving test by 10 March 2029.
Booking the driving test by that date is not enough. It must be passed.
Failing the driving test does not extend the deadline. You can take the test several times, but every attempt must be within the same three years. Between attempts you must wait four weeks.
If you have not passed the driving test within the three years, you must take a new theory test before you can take the driving test again.
When you can take the tests
You can take the car theory test from the age of 17 and a half. You can take the driving test from your 18th birthday.
You must pass the theory test before you can book the driving test.
